For example, the 4U1UN beacon in New York is currently off air while renovation work is being completed to the roof of the United Nations building where it is housed. Each beacon transmits in turn — a second sequence every three minutes. Once they have sent their sequence on, say, 14 MHz, the beacon moves up to 18 MHz and repeats it and another beacon takes up their slot on 14 MHz. All you have to do is just listen on the beacon frequencies and copy the CW callsigns of the various beacons to figure out where the band is open to. Because the beacons transmit at known times, it is easy to know which beacon is transmitting without actually knowing Morse code. The beacons starts to transmit at W, before stepping down to 10W, 1W and mW in one-second steps.

FM Radio stations make excellent beacons. They are plentiful and widespread. Several new tropospheric ducting paths were first identified and conformed by listening for FM radio stations, including the paths from St. Most FM stations stay on the air around the clock, and do not shut down late at night and the early morning hours when transoceanic ducting is at its best. A log periodic antenna is essential to cover the whole band. Quite a few low power FM stations transmit with vertical polarization, so an antenna that can be rotated in polarity, or two separate antennas for horizontal and vertical polarization, are required. If two antennas cannot be used, then a single yagi at a 45 degree slant may be a good compromise as it is equally down -3dB from both horizontal and vertical polarities.

Forgot Password? A band plan refers to a voluntary division of a band to avoid interference between incompatible modes. You need only register once for each band.
The radio is turned on by the crew for school contacts and when the crew gets on the air for random contacts, as Astronaut Kuipers has done in the past few weeks. This is acceptable in as far as the KI unit under construction does not need to be modified. This beacon will allow automated DATV transmissions more or less permanently.
